BioGuard™ PTFE Pleated Membrane Filter

Engineered for Extreme Chemical Resistance.

Achieving complete process security requires choosing a filter that can handle both your target fluid and your sanitation chemistry without breaking down. Many common membrane filters swell or degrade when exposed to aggressive oxidizing agents, ozone water, or constant high-temperature loops. When a membrane fails structurally, it compromises your entire production line and introduces the risk of bacterial contamination.

BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter is designed specifically for these critical, high-stress processing zones. Available in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) options, these cartridges combine absolute microbial retention with unmatched chemical resistance. They provide a secure, long-lasting biological barrier for bottled water, premium spirits, tank vents, and compressed gas lines.

Choosing Your PTFE Matrix: Hydrophilic vs. Hydrophobic

PTFE is prized for its legendary chemical toughness and thermal stability. To cover every aspect of your process loop, the BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter series is manufactured in two distinct membrane formulations:

Hydrophilic PTFE (For Liquid Processing)

Standard PTFE naturally repels water. Our hydrophilic BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter version undergoes a specialized surface modification that allows the membrane to wet instantly and uniformly with aqueous liquids.

  • When to use it: Ideal for the filtration of bottled water, process water, and high-proof spirits.
  • The benefit: Operators can start the line immediately without complex alcohol pre- wetting or flushing procedures. It is completely resistant to high concentrations of ozone and harsh clean-in-place chemicals, and it will not strip delicate flavors or aromas from premium beverages.

Hydrophobic PTFE (For Air, Gas, and Venting)

This formulation retains the natural, water-repelling characteristics of raw PTFE. It acts as an absolute barrier to liquid water while allowing air and gases to flow freely through the membrane matrix.

  • When to use it: Ideal for sterile tank venting, compressed air lines, carbon dioxide carbonation lines, and nitrogen sparging systems.
  • The benefit: Because it repels moisture completely, the membrane prevents airborne bacteria and wild yeasts from entering your storage tanks, keeping your headspace sterile even in high-humidity processing environments.

Precision Micron Ratings for Complete Security

To match your specific process risks and fluid dynamics, the BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter series is manufactured in four precise micron tiers:

Micron (Absolute Sterile Grade): The ultimate biological wall. This rating is widely used in high-purity water plants to protect against ultra-fine bacteria, environmental contaminants, and stubborn water-borne micro-organisms.

  • 0.1 Micron: Choose this for critical water lines where you must guarantee protection against ultra-fine bacteria and water-borne micro-organisms.
  • 0.22 Micron (Standard Sterile Grade): The global benchmark for cold sterilization. Fully validated to retain Brevundimonas diminuta, this rating guarantees the complete removal of spoilage bacteria, wild yeasts, and molds right before your filling needles or inside your air lines.
  • 0.45 Micron (Microbial Reduction): Perfect for pre-filtration and clarification where you need to trap common spoilage organisms like Lactobacillus while maximizing processing speeds.
  • 1.0 Micron (Clarification & Polish): Designed for bulk yeast removal and high-efficiency polishing of spirits, syrups, and liquid ingredients.

Thermal Integrity During Continuous Steam and CIP Cycles

The food and beverage industry demands aggressive sanitation routines. A standard membrane filter will quickly stretch, distort, or suffer endcap separation under repeated thermal shock.

BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter cartridges are engineered to withstand continuous thermal stress. The structural outer cage, inner support core, and endcaps are constructed from heavy-duty polypropylene. Every single component is molecularly fused together using advanced thermal welding.

Because we do not use glues, epoxies, or secondary binders, the filter cannot crack, leak, or separate. The cartridges easily survive repeated hot water flushes and in-line steam sterilization cycles up to 135°C (275°F), keeping your line running without unexpected downtime.

Specifications and Operational Parameters

The BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter series features an industry-standard Code 7 configuration, utilizing a secure twin 226 O-ring locking bayonet base and a pointed fin tip to prevent fluid bypass. It is also available in Code 3 and double-open-end styles.

All materials used in construction are completely free of silicone and surfactants, and they meet FDA criteria for direct food contact under 21 CFR regulations.

Most common questions plant engineers

Q. What is the practical difference between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic PTFE options?

The core polymer is the same, but the surface chemistry is completely different:

  • Hydrophilic PTFE undergoes a permanent surface modification that allows it to attract water. It wets instantly when exposed to liquids, making it perfect for water lines, ozone filtration, and high-proof spirits without requiring alcohol pre-wetting.
  • Hydrophobic PTFE naturally repels water and moisture. It stays completely dry even in high-humidity environments, allowing gases to pass through while forming an absolute barrier against liquids. This makes it ideal for sterile air lines, gas sparging, and tank venting.

Q: Why choose PTFE over standard PES or Polypropylene for liquid filtration?

Chemical and thermal compatibility. While PES membranes work beautifully for standard beverage lines, they can degrade quickly when exposed to high levels of ozone, harsh oxidizing agents, or aggressive clean-in-place (CIP) chemicals. PTFE is virtually inert. It can withstand continuous exposure to ozone water, strong caustic washes, and extreme acids without swelling, stripping flavor compounds, or suffering structural breakdown.

Q: Can the hydrophobic version be used in steam-in-place (SIP) operations?

Yes. Both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter elements are built using advanced thermal welding with a heavy-duty polypropylene structural cage. They are designed to withstand repeated in-line steam sterilization cycles up to 135°C (275°F). For hydrophobic air and vent lines, keeping the filter free of condensate after a steam cycle is critical to ensuring immediate, unrestricted air flow.

Q: Are these cartridges safe for organic and certified clean-label beverage lines?

Absolutely. BioGuard™ PTFE pleated membrane filter cartridges are completely free of silicone, surfactants, and resin binders. The entire cartridge is manufactured from pure, virgin materials that meet FDA 21 CFR regulations for direct food contact. Because there are no secondary glues or lubricants used during manufacturing, there is zero risk of chemical extractables leaching into your product stream or altering product flavor profiles.

Q: When should we replace the elements?

For liquid lines, we recommend a change-out differential pressure (ΔP) of 2.4 bard (35 psid). In compressed gas or air venting applications, the pressure drop across the filter is naturally much lower; however, the cartridges should be replaced based on your facility’s standard operational validation window or if an integrity test indicates a breach in the membrane matrix
